Okay, all, as many of you already saw on this post, I did a translation of the last three pages of chapter 97. I'm sick and headachey and Shadow can do this much better than I can, so that's all you're getting out of me, but I'm reposting the translation here.

The translation:

Page 28:
Kureno: She held on and cried till I thought she'd break.
It's for this girl that I live from now on...
Page 29:
Kureno: ...weaker than anyone,
more fragile than anyone,
it's for that timid girl's [note: the kanji reads "Akito" but he says "ano ko," that girl] sake...
Page 30:
Kureno: It's all
for that poor girl...

So, there you have it. Sorry to all those boy!Akito fangirls, and sorry to me because I'm a diehard Kureno/Arisa fan. :( Oh well.

People's views on a character shouldn't really change if the gender is revealed, but I guess to each their own. I know for certain it doesn't bother me at all.

....*ahem*
Er-huh?
Akito has been referred to as male in the manga up to this point? *scratches head* I don't...ah, It just seems weird for it be suddenly "He's a she!" I mean, I don't see the point? Perhaps because I haven't been reading the manga. Why would 'he' pass himself off as male if he's really a she? It doesn't seem in character for him to be ashamed of his gender.
Whetever Akito is though, you gotta love..him..her...it...o_O; Gaaah....

And I think it's definitely in character for him/her to hide it. She's shown misogynistic tendencies and is supposed to be the head of the Sohma family, which in a society like Japan's would traditionally be a man's role. So it makes sense IMO for her to pretend to be male.

I wish I could read the manga or else I'd buy them all, and I hate waiting on the translations that are expensive. So I don't really know Kureno at all...but...I hear he was with Hana-chan...and...I want that because she should be happy o_o;
Anyway, the translation is wonderful. And the words are beautiful, I might add. Sounds like that's pretty pure love or dedication x_x

Well, this spells disaster for the Akiru fic which I'm supposed to be updating! I'm really wondering if it's even possible to continue it with matters the way they are now... It's so strange to be reading about Akito being referred to as a "she".
But the twist is great, interesting, and KurenoxAkito is definitely making all these plot bunnies come hopping out!

I admit I like akiru and even wrote akiru lemons but I doubt I'll ever write another fic with akito using her non-existing dick with tohru but it leaves room for yuri :)

Thank you for the translation. It made a lot more sence than my own version, which I'll keep to my self.
it involved the word "solidification"

(I really hope it's one of those, gender-changing characters...like the anime Maze n Angel Sanctuary, etc.
....But good God, it's. not. fair. *cries*
The yaoi fanbase is shattered for all eternity!)

Namely, her reactions to certain events/flashbacks. Her possesiveness over Yuki and Hatori make a WHOLE lot more of sense now. As well as her being angry at Kisa because the one she loved was so open with it. Also, it explains the whole reason why Akito doesn't really like Tohru that much. Jealousy much?
But yeah. AFter learning about this, I kinda like Aktio now.
August 20 2004, 20:31:15 UTC 7 years ago
>_> Just because I'm anal, I got a second opinion! Even if it's not so poetic. :3;;;
"She cried brokenly. It's for her sake that I live."
"Weaker than anyone, frailer than anyone... For the sake of that timid person, for the sake of that lonely person."
...so could you just point the "akito" line my way? *is trying to kill every avenue of possibility so she won't be in denial about akito's female-ness*
August 20 2004, 20:41:04 UTC 7 years ago
On page 29, the roomaji goes: "Dare yori mo yowakute, dare yori mo morokute, okubyou na ano ko no tame ni."
The kanji next to the 'ano ko' furigana however, is the kanji for Akito's name. So that's the Akito thing. He doesn't say Akito aloud to Tohru, but it's a common thing in manga for mangaka to add a secondary meaning to the line by adding a different kanji to a word. For another example in Furuba, during the scene between Kyo and Akito in volume 11, even when Akito says Kyo's name it's written next to the kanji "bakemono," for "monster."

anyway...i know i still love Akito.
i'm sure that the manga's will explain this...transformation later on, so im just patiently waiting...::shakes computer "FASTER DAMMIT!!!"::
and this does explain why Akito loves Yuki, and hates girls...maybe she also loves Kyo, who wouldn't? then...when Kyo's in his cage, Akito can...::thinks dirty thoughts that have been created with not enough sleep:: >)
thanks so much for the translations! mai japanese has something to be desired...

So...if Akito is God in the curse legend...then God is a WOMAN! YES! LOL.

And I *STILL* worship the ground Akito-sama walks on. Just...from the perspective of someone who has tried to get in Akito's head for RPing, this makes so much more SENSE now! I can't explain how...but...it really does....

Musings from an Akito fangirl...
I guess I'm one of those people whose stuck in between denial and intrigue. I mean, I'm a huge Akito fangirl. I love the "evil" characters the best, and Akito always struck me as that character in Fruits Basket, most likely because that's what s/he is.It's kinda funny too, because about half an hour before I saw the original post with the picture of Akito, I had been watching the Hatori episode of the anime (8 I believe?) with my 8 year old sister (dubbed, she can't read the subs fast enough). And I was fangirling to her about Akito, how he was my favorite character, and how pretty he was, etc, etc... Then I go back the the computer, and what do I see, but Akito with a pair of boobs that no man should have, if he doesn't want to make girls jealous *laughs*.
Plus, shallow-y, I must add, I was/am quite the yaoi fangirl regarding all pairings involving Akito... He was the manipulative uke to me, my favorite type. But I especially loved the strange dynamics of all the evil things he could have done to Yuki to make him hate Akito so much.
And I guess, I will still like Akito as a girl. I mean, I don't classify myself with a gender preferance, but I've always just liked things that are aesthetically pleasing. Akito was perfect that way. But even as a girl, I realize that I still like her, because she doesn't look like (or act like) the normal anime girl (this is me saying that I don't normally dislike anime girls just for getting in the way of yaoi pairings, but that I don't like the way they act, or something to that effect), and it's that difference that will continue to draw my interest to Akito, despite the gender surprise. First time I've had a favorite character be female... ^^;;;
And on another note, I kinda support what strawbryshuichi said above, about Akito maybe being both. If he really is the 'god' of the zodiac... Well, I've always pictured the god as more of a sexless being, rather than having a set gender...
Wow, that went on *way* too long. I'll just shut up, I suppose...
